Why We Built This

There are millions of stories already written. Thousands of audiobooks recorded. And yet most people find themselves finishing a book and thinking — I wish this had gone differently. I wish the world had been built this way instead. I wish I could have made different choices.

Novels AI started with that feeling. Not with a technology looking for a use case, but with a creative problem looking for a solution. If stories are how we understand ourselves — and we think they are — then the most powerful version of that experience is one shaped around the person doing the listening.

We don't position ourselves as a replacement for literature. We're a complement to it — a space where fiction is exploratory, interactive, and genuinely yours.

2022
The Idea
Daniel Ashworth and Maya Chen began prototyping a personalised fiction engine during a creative technology residency in Glasgow. The original concept was simpler — a genre selector with basic narrative branching. The ambition grew quickly.
2023
First Build
The first version of the Novels AI platform was built with a team of five. Sound designer Tom Belshaw joined to develop the ambient audio layer — which turned out to transform the experience entirely. Editorial advisor Alicia Nwosu joined to ensure quality standards.
2024
Voice Synthesis Launch
We launched our multi-voice narration system with three initial voices. User response was stronger than expected. The platform began to grow organically through word of mouth — particularly through the horror and sci-fi communities on Discord.
2026
Full Platform
Novels AI launched publicly as a complete platform with 14 narrator voices, 120+ story worlds, interactive branching narratives, and subscription access. The community on Discord, YouTube, and TikTok has become one of the most engaged creative communities we've encountered.
